Literature Text

Here we observe a different world,
where balloons are born, not people, by
the joining of other balloons. Floating pockets
of all shapes and sizes and colours and heights drift
across a prickly world, bumping into other balloons.
Sometimes they collide and send each other flying
sometimes static binds two or more together.
Whatever higher entity governs this world creates two
of each type; every balloon is a twin
Some expand into their strange existences
on the other sides of this inflatable planet;
some begin their drifting life in the very
same wards their matches do.
A curious element of this world is that these balloons
often do drift in pairs
Sometimes the strings which hang from the
knots intertwine between two and knot,
sometimes they never quite connect
Rarely, two balloons of exact matches will collide
and rarer still, they'll bond.
A red star-shaped balloon, large, drifts
alongside and statically charged to a round balloon
of a lighter shade but similar
across an air current that takes them past
another star-shaped balloon, large, and of the
exact same colour as the former
In that instant a charge is transferred between the original pair
and the identical balloons, and now the two stars
are compelled towards each other.
Inertia strikes and the three are jarred from their original courses
The two stars bind together and catch a new current of air
The round balloon, a lighter shade of red and smaller,
spins off its trajectory and spends
an unknown amount of time reeling, winding, bouncing
into other balloons just as incompatible as a star-shaped
prism to a small round balloon, before by chance
winding itself into the void of a crescent-
shaped float. A deep navy blue, the wafting lunar effigy
charges with static as the small red balloon slides in
and the two impossibly dissimilar things too
find another air current and drift
How does a balloon write a poem with no hands?

The great poem of life. Hail Balloons!
